PhD student working both in Dr. Mark Lyte's lab as well as Dr. Stephan Schmitz-Esser’s lab studying microbiology. The main focus of my thesis is understanding how a sodium-saccharin based sweetener affects the rumen microbial communities of dairy cattle. To answer this question, I have used 16S rRNA gene targeted amplicon sequencing to identify shifts in both epimural and lumenal microbial communities of the dairy cattle rumen. Going forward, I will try to functionally characterize these changes using metatranscriptomics. Furthermore, I will conduct in vitro experiments of rumen isolated bacteria using UHPLC to understand relevant microorganism's expression behaviors of important signaling molecules and nutritionally-relevant metabolites for the host.
