The Rued Lab is interested in host microbiomes and the streptococci that inhabit these niches. Streptococci play a major role in the health of both humans, livestock, and companion animals, and can cause serious diseases. We are particularly interested in the secondary metabolites these streptococci produce, and how streptococci interact with the host and the environment to influence host health. Current areas of research in the lab are: examining the function and role of streptococcal RaS-RiPPs (radical S-adenosylmethonine ribosomally translated and post-translationally modified peptides) in the human oral microbiome, examining the role RaS-RIPPs play in cross-species interactions, and the influence of streptococci on both human and animal hosts. Dr. Rued combines the use of metagenomics, transcriptomics, genetics, and biochemistry to pursue these projects.
