Many clinically-relevant antibiotic resistance genes are carried on plasmids that can be transferred from a donor strain to other resident bacterial members in the gastrointestinal tract. Using a murine model to study the transfer of a large antibiotic resistance plasmid from foodborne Salmonella Kentucky to a human commensal E. coli in the gastrointestinal tract, this study demonstrates that plasmid transfer between bacteria is influenced by the host genetics, in addition to the role of microbial complexity on E. coli and Salmonella colonization.
